A vibrating couples' ring is one of the easiest ways to bring a toy into partnered sex. It's worn at the base of the penis, and a small vibrating section adds sensation for both partners during penetration. Here's how to use one comfortably.
What it does
The stretchy ring sits at the base of the penis or shaft. That gentle snugness can make erections feel firmer for some people. The vibrating part usually faces up, toward the receiving partner, so it rests against the clitoris or vulva during penetration. Our Élan Vibrating Couples' Ring is soft, stretchy and designed to give sensation to both of you. For the basics on rings in general, see cock rings, explained.
Putting it on
- Add a little lube to the inside of the ring and to the shaft. Water-based lube such as plusOne Aloe Glide is safe with silicone.
- Stretch it gently and roll or slide it down to the base. Some people find it easier when partly erect, others when fully erect.
- Turn the vibrating section to face up, toward the partner's body.
- Check the fit. It should feel snug, never tight, painful or numbing.
Positions that suit it
- Missionary, close and grinding: staying pressed together and rocking, rather than long strokes, keeps the vibration in contact.
- Receiving partner on top: they can control the angle and pressure against the vibrating part.
- Spooning: slower and relaxed. The vibration reaches less directly, but it feels lovely all over.
Safety and comfort
- Wear it for 20–30 minutes at most at a time.
- Take it off straight away if there's pain, numbness, coldness or discoloured skin.
- Don't sleep in it.
- Check with a doctor first if you take blood thinners or have circulation concerns.
Want to try different sizes?
A non-vibrating set such as the Halo Silicone Ring Set includes three sizes, so you can find the fit you like. Both rings come together in The Duet Box, along with a remote plug, rope and lube. Our couples' toy guide has more ideas.
Cleaning
Wash the ring after each use with warm water and mild soap or a toy cleaner, keeping water away from any charging point, then let it dry fully. More tips are in our cleaning guide.
Quick answers
Which way should the vibration face?
Usually up, toward the receiving partner's body, so it rests against the clitoris or vulva during penetration.
How long can I wear a couples' ring?
Up to about 20–30 minutes at a time. Remove it straight away if it feels painful, cold or numb.
Can I use lube with it?
Yes. A little water-based lube makes it easier to put on and is safe with silicone.
Is it only for the person wearing it?
No. A vibrating couples' ring is designed so both partners feel the vibration.
