A playful swat can add a thrill of anticipation, a little edge and a lot of connection. Impact play simply means striking the body for pleasure, from a light tap with the hand to a paddle. Done thoughtfully, it's about trust and attention as much as sensation. Here's how to begin safely.
Start with a conversation
Talk about it before you try it, not in the moment. Ask what appeals to each of you, what's off-limits, and how intense you'd like to go. Agree on a safe word that means "stop now", and use a simple scale (say 1 to 10) so it's easy to say "that was a 3, try a 5". Our guide to consent covers this in more depth.
Where to aim, and where to avoid
Aim for well-padded areas: the fleshy part of the buttocks ("the sit spot", where the bottom meets the thigh) and the upper back of the thighs.
Avoid the lower back and kidneys, the spine and tailbone, joints such as knees, and the head, neck, face and stomach. If you're unsure, stay on the bottom.
Warm up first
Start with your hand. Rub, then pat, then build to light spanks. Warming the skin brings blood to the surface and makes stronger sensation more enjoyable. A blindfold such as the Velour Satin Sleep Mask can heighten the anticipation, because not knowing exactly when the next touch will land is half the fun.
Introducing a paddle
A paddle spreads impact over a wider area than a hand, giving a satisfying "thud" with a crisp sound. Our Noir Leather Paddle is lightweight and finished in smooth black PU leather, which makes it easy to control.
- Begin with taps. Let the paddle's weight do the work; you need much less force than you'd think.
- Build gradually. Increase intensity slowly, checking in with your scale.
- Mix it up. Alternate swats with stroking, rubbing or kisses. Contrast makes each sensation stronger.
- Watch and listen. Breathing, sounds and body language tell you a lot, but always ask too.
Signs to stop
Stop at the safe word, of course, and also if you see broken skin, if your partner seems distressed or goes quiet, or if anything feels "off". Pink, warm skin is normal; anything more than that means ease off.
Aftercare
After intense play, slow down together. Soothe the skin with gentle touch or a plain moisturiser, offer water, and talk about what you enjoyed. Some people feel a little emotional afterwards, and that's normal. Our aftercare guide has more ideas.
Caring for your paddle
Wipe it with a damp cloth and mild soap after use, dry it well and store it flat in a drawer or pouch.
